New Bottle Cleaning/Sanitation

Fri Jul 09, 2010 2:50 pm

OK, I am bottling (which I dislike) for a family reunion...I had to buy some bottles. Think they can go straight to StarSan or do they need the PBW, rinse, then StarSan. All my recycled go rinse, PBW, rinse, StarSan/Dishwasher.

It depends a little on how they will be stored and how long they will be in the bottle.

If it is one week off till consumption, and you can store them cold, just rinse, starsan and run with it.

+1

If I'm just bottling a couple to give to friends or take somewhere, I just hit them with the bottle washer and sanitize. There's nothing that's going to show up in a couple of days in a thoroughly rinsed and sanitized bottle.

If I'm bottling for competition or aging, that's when I do the whole routine.

That's about what I figured which means I'll clean & sanitize everything, because my OCD will not let me JUST sanitize unless I am nearly sure they'll be good to go. I never know how long the bottles will sit...this is my first time bottling a large amount since I switched to kegging about 3-years ago.

Muchas gracias..

Seems everyone I talk to about this form MoreBeer staff to award winning homebrewers all have said to just sanitize (30 seconds of contact time with StarSan) and fill and cap on foam. That is all I have done. No problems so far.

Right on. Makes sense if the bottles are brand new or are clean. I was thinking there may be some film (like on some new machined parts ) on the glass that might necessitate wash then sanitize versus just sanitize. I need to just take my chances if I want to skip the step and see for myself. But it's not like it's really that much work. Just two more bukets...wash and rinse.

If they are brand new, you will be fine with a quick hot rinse, then starsan. I would give them 2-3 minutes (personally) in the starsan to make yourself feel better about the process.

Process now set and easy.

Bucket of PBW --> Bucket of rinse water -->Bottle Tree to drain/dry --> Flood with StarSan with spritzer-thingy I bought for top of bottle tree --> Cap with sanitized foil and put in fridge.

Bottle with BeerGun.

4+ gallons done last night. 4+ more to get done today. Brew tomorrow
