Fittings and a Regulator

Wed Jun 23, 2010 12:22 pm

I am doing a bit of a retooling of my regulator because at some of the connection points it has started to leak.

I am connecting a Y splitter to my regulator and then putting two shutoff valves into the brass Y splitter.

The shut off I have: http://www.northernbrewer.com/brewing/k ... 4-mfl.html

The brass Y fitting I have: http://www.northernbrewer.com/brewing/k ... 4-fpt.html

I have used the white thread seal tape from lowes to wrap all connection points, and that ended up failing. Is there a better way to put these together with a good seal?

Thanks,

Adam

how did it fail? are any threads cracked as pipe thread is tapered and if overtightened will split the female side. i used liquid pipe seal, and it blew out. i then wrapped each male with 5-6 wraps of white teflon tape and have can leave each reg pressured with tank off and no leaks 3 days later! there is also yellow teflon tape designed for gas systems as it is twice as thick. what is your leak test method?

Well first of all I noticed that my tanks weren't lasting as long, so I went ahead and sprayed some small amounts of starsan on the threaded connections points and I got bubbles. as two points.

So is the yellow tape the way to go?

I hate to admit that I am 90% Fliud Connector products design vs. the Hydraulic system design I used to do in Chicago. I am having a hard time, and this is the beer I had talking, believing that you can not seal the pipe threads in a 30 Psi system (Max reg setting). All my systems are designed around 150 Psi working, 250 Psi max, using good 'ole SAEJ476A pipe threads. Even if you are overtorquing, you would have to be failing the female port. Pipe thread sealant serves as an interstitial sealing device, but most importantly, to prevent galling. 3-5 wraps with standard thread sealant, 2 threads off the leading edge of the fittings, 2-3 turns, and you should be golden.............

my cornelius primaries can put out 150psi no problem... but the max i have ever used was 40.

you need to put enough tape on and insure the threads are engaged properly. also, be sure to leak-down above "normal" operating range.
