Hops in the Bottle

Tue Jan 16, 2007 10:51 am

Tried a little experiment with my last batch of Pale. I added approx 1/2 a Cascade pellet to a few bottles while bottling and then conditioned as usual. I compared a non-hopped to a hopped bottle and found that the one with the hop pellet had a great aroma and flavor and for some reason a slightly lighter color. Since I don't have the cash to throw down for a kegging setup and I've never had much spin from dry-hopping in the secondary, is there any reason that I shouldn't keep doing this?

With the alcohol in the bottle sanitation shouldn't be a problem unless you're flickin' boogers in there with the pellet.

Obviously only do this with bottles you plan on consuming within, say, 3 months or I doubt the risk of infection would be worth it as the added aroma will be mostly gone by then.

Send some to me.

A member of the club I am in put a hop cone in bottles of his harvest ale. We drank samples that were over a year over with no obvious issues.

It would be interesting to compare the impressions of that beer with what it was a month after bottling. I would imagine all hop aroma and much flavor would be reduced greatly.
