First off..... I said pot.

So, I picked up a keg. Isn't she pretty. Fifteen bucks, and its even legal. It used to have miller light in it, but I think I heard it start singing when it realized it was guna make home brew.



Anyway, I've got the outside cleaned up, and I'm about to cut the top off.
Question for ya'll: Have you found it works better to cut the hole in the very top, inside the handles, or cut around the outer edge just below the handles.

Handles are nice, but I can see getting wort in that crack between the top and handle rim and having to spend time cleaning it out. Not cleaning as much is nice but having a rim for a resonable sized lid is good too.

Any of you guys smarter than me, and know the answer?
Or do any of you guys just know the answer?

I've always seen it with the handles, if it was me I'd leave 'em.

If you are using it for a boil my suggestion is cut as much of the TOP off as possible, this would NOT include the handle portions, leave those. I left a reasonable "rim" on mine originally and it just got in the way as well as kept enough heat and steam in there to help with boilovers.

Find the biggest lid from a stock pot you already have and cut the opening so that lid can just fit over the kettle top. Leave the handles, they are nifty for lifting and hefting this thing around. I use these kettles as well. A great find for that price.

If it is a boil pot why do you need a lid?

Call me paranoid, but I use a lid when chilling so nothing unwanted drops in.

How did you procure a keg legally for $15????

I heard (perhaps on TBN?) that the steam and what not coming off during cooling has DMS or DMS pre-cursors in it, so I never cover mine.
