keeping out bugs and leaves when boiling outside

Fri May 26, 2006 12:07 pm

I have just obtained a propane burner and am now boiling my wort outside. Unfortunately, springtime air in the country is full of all sorts of stuff including bugs and tree droppings etc. Any ideas about keeping it all out of my wort? I have tried an old window screen, but this seems to encourage boil over and I don't like the condensation dripping back down into my wort.

I just let what little falls in fall in... and call it house flavor.
Seriously unless you have a flock of crows shitting in your beer you won't notice it... after the boil is a different story.

I agree. I'd take crow poop over poor fermentation any day.

Haven't had any bird droppings in mine yet, but I do pick out the occasional grasshopper, cicada and oak leaves. Sometimes I'm tempted to leave the bugs in for obvious reasons.
