turkey fryer as a burner questions

Wed May 24, 2006 5:29 pm

I found what I thought was a good price on a turkey fryer, but it doesnt say how many BTU's it is, just says 'high btu output'. Im only want to do 5 gal boils right now, what are the chances this wont put out enough heat to boil 5 gallons? Considering its designed to deep fry a turkey in oil, it should be able to boil wort, right? Ive got a keg im going to convert, will that be too thick to get it hot enough, and how big of a base do I NEED for a keggle?

Thanks.

What size pot comes with it or is it just the burner? I have a 8 gallon turkey fryer that works just fine. I believe most turkey fryers need at least a 5 gallon pot to fit a turkey in it so I would guess you would be fine.

My turkey pot is about 5 or 6 gal (and that oil gets up to like 350F), I'm able to boil my 5 gal of wort just fine. I don't think I've ever seen a fryer that wouldn't handle it.

both burners on my system are turkey fryer burners and are rated at 170,000 btu, I boil 12.5 gallons of beer and havre never had a problem with them.

I have a turkey fryer from menards for like $30, works great, but as for using a converted keg on it, I'd watch out for stability you might want to do some work to make it more stable on the base, no one likes 5 gallons of hot wort spilling everywhere :D

You do have to build a more stable stand for a converted keg. Or build a deticated sculpture.

mine is a King Kooker or some such BS... It fits a Keg fine with no modification. It just depends on how yours is built wheather a keg will fit on there.
