Just noticed this thread. As mentioned it's entirely possible to get OG and FG entirely by Brix. The formula is based on calculations, so it may not be exactly as precise as a hydrometer, but it suits my purposes just fine. Do your own experimentation, I think you'll find the numbers very close.

I didn't really care for the Promash version, so I wrote my own here.

4x's the reading works for me. It's my understanding that brix and plato are pretty much interchangeble. Anyone else confirm?
Mine is calibrated in increments of two. It's impossible to tell 10.20 vs 10.25 readings. I use mine primarily to determine if i need to stop collecting wort in the boil kettle during lautering. I then use a hydrometer to check gravity at the end of boil. The hydometer is easier for me to get an exact reading. my 2 cents
