Brewmometer sticking

Wed Jul 05, 2006 1:13 pm

I had a Brewmometer stick yesterday.

I thought I was mashing at 153 until I tapped the dang thing and watched the needle jump to 160!

Has this been a consistent problem for others?
Do I need to keep tapping on the Brewmometer all the time?

I ALWAYS tap my thermometers when taking readings, no matter what kind they are. Better safe than sorry.

So does the reading ever change when you tap the electronic "instant read?" :) How about the mercury filled one?

anyway, tapping any make of bimetal gauge thermometer is proabably a good idea. They rely on twisting a strip of metal inside the probe and sometimes they get hung up (as you've seen).

OK, you got me. I meant to say "...no matter what BRAND they are", since they're not Brewmometers.

Then again, I've never seen an "instant read" read in an instant, but maybe, just maybe if you TAP it....

Someone told me if you tap it too much then you're playing with it...
