In the fridge. Where do you live?

As Alli stated on the organic hops show the other night, they are pretty hearty plants, as long as your soil isn't frozen you can put them into the ground. She says they will with stand frost.

As long as they are still dormant... I made that mistake last year...

Anyway, screw all of you who are putting your hops in the ground now! My last frost is usually around May 10-15 (to be safe) and I still have snow on the ground! Hops in the ground april 1st?

Ok, btw... harvesting your own rhizomes question... anyone have experience doing this on second year hops? The homebrewers garden talks about chopping back the crown every year, to a 1'x1' square, and I would assume that would provide plentiful rhizomes.. just curious if anyone has done this or has picts to match.

Sometimes I wished I lived in the land of OZ. :aaron

I went ahead and planted my Hops Yesterday. :) I weather man is saying 70's this week. :D Birds that run south for the year are all ready here. :o A couple weeks early this year. 8)

Planted two each of Nuggets and Galenas. I will see how they do on the west side of my house. Lot of sun there in the summer. Easy to water (sprinklers) :D

When you soil is workable and you start to see a little growth on your main plant, gently pull back some of the soil around the crown. You probably find a piece of rhizome naturally growing off to the side. Try to get a piece about the same size as the one you originally planted. You should be able to get a couple of them on you're second year plant. If you don't find any, don't fret. After you plant is has put up bines a couple of feet or so, you'll probably see some other growth just starting to poke up within a foo of the crown - there's you're rhizome to harvest. I have found the several feet away. It just depends on your plant.

Here's a link to a blog post I made last year regarding moving my hops. The plants are a little older than what you are asking about, but I think you will get the picture
