Pliny the Bastard?

I plan on combining my two favorite beers, Pliny the Elder and Arrogant Bastard into Pliny the Bastard.

The recipe below is the base for Pliny (More Beer), with CaraAroma subbed for C40, bittering by Chinook, and dry hopped with Chinook, Columbus, and Centennial. SRM will be a bit darker from the CaraAroma. The beer fermented with WLP001 (Pliny) instead of WLP007 (Bastard).

Do you think 147 IBUs of Chinook will be overpowering? The Pliny recipe with Magnum, Simcoe, Columbus, and Centennial is 153 IBU (per Beersmith).

The resulting beer should be dry, like Pliny, but bursting with Chinook goodness.

Looking for feedback.

From my understanding you can only push about 100 IBUs max into the wort, and the average human palate only perceives 80 or so. The recipe looks good though, go for it and let us know how it turns out! I'm interested to see how the bitterness comes across. Personally though, I'd change the 90 minute addition to maybe a 45 min addition to try to reduce the harshness. just my two cents though. happy brewing!

I am following the Pliny recipe that calls for 2 ounces of 12 AA Magnum at 90 minutes, 1 ounce of 13 AA Simcoe at 45 minutes, and 1 ounce of 14 AA Columbus at 30 minutes. Flameout gets 2 ounces of Columbus and 1 ounce of Simcoe.

This hop schedule in Beersmith gives 153 IBU.

Do you think the Chinook is too much?

I like the looks of it but I can see why you might be concerned with it having too much Chinook but I personally love me some Chinook.

When they did the Arrogant Bastard clone(s) on CYBI, didn't they decide that Special B was the key specialty malt? Maybe try that instead of the Cararoma?

I'm also a huge fan of Chinook. I did a SMASH Chinook IPA this summer and it was fantastic. That said, maybe add from Citra for bittering along with the Chinook? You're dry hop schedule is a mix, but your boil hops are all Chinook. If you're going to mix it up anyway, why not add to the boil?

Pliny the Bastard was a great brew, part Pliny, part Arrogant Bastard. The CaraAroma gave the wort a nice red hue and the Chinook amped up the flavor. Double dry hopping put it over the top.
