How much longer does fly sparging take YOU?

Sun Dec 01, 2013 8:47 pm

I batch sparge right now, but i'm thinking about giving fly sparging a try. A lot of people claim it's more consistent, plus i get to build new widgets. :D I did a Google search, but there is a LOT of information on this topic.....A lot. And a lot of the information is often contradictory.

So how much longer does fly sparging take YOU personally?

I'd say it's LESS consistent... unless you, your equipment and your process are really dialed in. Most of the people bitching about unusually low efficiency are fly spargers. It does have a higher potential efficiency (generally), but human and equipment error has more impact that batch sparging in general.

It's not less consistent, the brewers are. I gave up batch sparging years ago. No problems with low or missing numbers at all.

How much time did switching over add to your brew day? What I've read suggest it adds anywhere from 20 minutes to an extra 90 minutes.

Not a clue anymore. It wasn't that much if any at all. When I batched I used a very slow run-off to increase extraction & prevent sticking it. The added time is from people who run off their batch like a cow pissing on a rock.

Depending on the number and rest lengths of each batch sparge you do, a fly sparge would usually take about 20 min longer. And yes I agree with Oz that you can get more consistent and expected results with a proper fly sparge given the technique is solid.

Which reminds me. Trim your bushes. A guy could lose an eye hiding in those things. If you find some :nutters:, please mail them back to Spidey. And don't wash them first. He hates that.
