I have found my horses don't really care for the spent grain.

However, I have found putting a full steeping bag full of spent grain in the stock tank significantly reduces the amount of algae and moss. I still get some growing on the sides of the tank but the floaty shit doesn't show up much. I went from having to drain and clean the tank once every week or two to about once every six to eight weeks.

Huh... wonder if that is pH based?

Spider,

I'm not really sure. I was searching the interwebs for natural stock tank moss control and they sell these really expensive little bales of barley chaff and straw. The website claimed it had to do with proteins.

I figured it wouldn't hurt to give it a shot and it works suprisingly well. I have used the same couple of pounds of grain all summer.

Good that it works! I'd just be interested to know why....

I doubt that small amount of grain would have an effect on the pH of that much water. Tannins from the husks, maybe?
