Nuts in my beer

Thu Aug 02, 2012 1:37 pm

hey BN dudes...my wife expressed great interest in me making some sort of nut porter (i said nut) last night and after doing much research on the interwebs I am even more confused than before...should the nuts (I said nuts) be added to the mash, boil, or secondary?...I saw recipes with it every different way...I don't really want to use extract because I was thinking of using macadamia, pine nuts, or pistachios which I'm am not sure there are extracts for...seems to me that the mash would be the best place and my plan is to buy a pound of raw nuts (I said nuts), toast them, and put directly into the mash in order to get that really fresh nut (I said nut) taste...I seem to remember a show (I think CYBI) where doc made a macadamia nut beer but search results come back negative...any input is appreciated

Cheers!

Did a hazelnut brown all with one of those organic extracts. Just dose in the keg or secondary. I don't remember how much I used tho...

As for real nuts, you'll have to figure out the best way to put your nuts in the beer for your wife...

Loosely crush em.

Toast em in the oven.

Add em to the mash.

You twisted bastard! While dipping your nuts in your beer can make for a good time, I'd wash em first. Unless you were looking for that 'I just mowed the lawn' flavor.
