Refermenting

I was listening to one of the Vinnie shows and he said that it was possible to ferment out the sugars from Lindeman's Framboise to get to their base beer. That got me thinking, what else have people attempted to re-ferment? I am talking about more than just beer here. Soda's have a lot of sugar which means they could be fermentable. Could yeast push through all of the preservatives and ferment a coke, even if they could would it be any good? How about a fermented grape soda? I would be interested in hearing any stories about some of the weird commercial products that people have tried to ferment and the results.

For some reason, I thought the refermenting of Lindeman's was on the Ommegang show when Randy was talking about how they use some Kriek in 3P?

With regards to your original question, I've fermented a lot of different juice products with good results. One of my favorites is Black Currant juice made by Looza. Blended into a nice semi-sweet mead, it is very tasty.

8 liters Looza Black Currant Nectar
2.7-2.8 pounds of Sugar
1 packet of Nottingham Dry Yeast

One of my friends gave me this original recipe, which was just a very simple wine recipe, I've since found that replacing the sugar with honey makes a much more complex end product.

The refermenting of Lindeman's has been discussed several times on the Session - most recently on the show with Mike Mraz. You won't get the 'base beer'... you will just get a drier version of what you start with.
