Wet T-shirt on a bucket?

Tue Jun 24, 2008 8:52 am

So I just listen to the Frugal Brewer show on 7/16/06. Awesome show!

I was wondering if the wet t-shirt method for maintaining temp control work for plastic buckets? Or is it only good for carboys?

Because of the difference in thermal conductivity between glass and plastic, the wet t-shirt would be slightly less effective on a bucket but should still work. Also with a carboy you can have the shirt covering the carboy from water level to the neck, giving you much more evaporative surface area than what you could get with a bucket. If you are using a bucket, I would suggest dropping frozen water bottles into the surrounding tub to keep the temp down. Use enough of them and you can even maintain lager fermentation temps.

On the other hand, a wet t-shirt over a pair of jugs may actually raise your temperature. 8)

Thanks Bug.

Currently, my basement seems to be cool enough to maintain temp at 68F.

I have been thinking more about going to carboys for the sanitation factor. I recently had to "retire" a bucket because of scratches; I didn't want to risk getting an infection.

I am a BIG fan of a wet t-shirt on jugs.

If you have any pictures eof your wet T-shirt on Jug application, we would be happy to review them and comment on their thermal dissapative properties. And we'll probably drool a little too..

I was SO disappointed when I read this thread. Kinda how I was when I saw "Naked Lunch." Both titles are misleading.
