I whipped up my typical starter yesterday, sanitized the wyeast 1056 package, sanitized the scissors, cut open the wyeast package and carefully dumped it into the starter. A couple hours later I looked at it and there is a little piece of clear plastic floating on top (1/2 inch log 1/8 inch wide). So I took a look at the wyeast package in the garbage and I clipped the inner package that you *SMACK* to prove the yeast is viable.

So would you pitch this starter into the wort later today with that piece of plastic? My only other option would be to pitch a package of S05 dry yeast.

Yep Yep use it. Maybe try and strain it out before it goes into the fermentor.

Do not hesitate to use it.
if you can scoop or filter out the little plastic bit great. If not, chances are it'll floc out with the yeast.

I'm about to pitch... I don't think I'll filter it out. It floats so with any luck, it'll stay in the flask with the stir bar. Thanks!

Don't go through desperate measures to keep it out of the wort. If it gets in there, oh well, deal with it when you're done. Trying too hard to get it out will cause way more problems than just saying, "Screw it."

Yep, that was my theory.. if I tried hard to filter it out I'd cause more harm than good. So it went into the carboy and its fermenting away. Something tells me I'll be swallowing it in 6 to 8 weeks.. uhhh.. the little piece of plastic.

Better piece of advice: Stick a piece of blue tape on the carboy that says "PLASTIC YOU DUMBASS".
