Funky smell from wlp655 starter... Help please?

Wed Jun 29, 2011 2:04 pm

Hello BNr's... Im brewing a Bam Biere clone from one of the JZ shows... I saved and made a starter with the bottle dregs from a couple of the actual beers and they smell wonderful but I was concerned that they wouldn't be 'strong' enough to kick out the sour ish flavors I was hoping for. So I bought the wlp655 Belgian sour mix strain and made a starter with it as well... Here lies the problem. The bam Biere starter smells AWESOME... a really nice pleasing sour-y smell, but the 655 starter is giving off some way funky smells... I've only had one beer get ruined by what I think was some sort of bacteria and the starter smells exactly like that infected beer... Is the 655 strain supposed to smell like this or do I have some other unwanted bugs at work here? Anyone know what kinda smells the 655 should be putting off right now? Is this normal? Thanks

Exactly what kind of funky, remember that a lot of the bacteria you will run into are the same that would consider to be spoiling a non sour beer.

After smelling the 655 starter again and there's definitely a tinge of sulphur possibly with something else?

hmm Not sure, doesn't appear to be yeast derived according to what i have read online about that yeast.
