Using yeast from the blow-off tube

Sun Jan 16, 2011 8:24 am

I'm new to starters, so on my second attempt, I made a 2-liter starter from wort left-over from a previous boil and adjusted it to 1.040. Made the starter from Wyeast 1056 and pitched. When the krausen settled in the blow-off jar, I had about a half inch of yeast. Has anyone ever tried to re-pitch this yeast?

I've heard of people who brew double batches and only pitch into one carboy then run the blowoff hose into the second carboy. Never tried it myself but it seems sort of like top-cropping so I don't see why it wouldn't work. I'd think collecting it from your blowoff jar would be fine as long as that jar and its water are kept sanitary.

That's what I was thinking. I used the starter jar, figuring it was already sanitary. Next time I'll put some Saran wrap around the opening and try it.
