Foil instead of airlock

Fri Aug 06, 2010 6:56 pm

Just got a mini fridge for fermenting, only problem is that my carboy is about an inch from the top, can I just ferment out for a week with just foil on the carboy instead of an airlock? I would then pull the carboy out and put the airlock on and let it sit at room temp for a week, then bottle. Issues? Better ideas?

you could use a carboy hood/cap and a blowoff tube. I think that would work with just an inch of space.

It would. Also, you could stick a piece of tubing into a stopper and run it into a cup of sanitizer (basic blowoff tube setup). Same deal, and would only add a inch or so to the top of the carboy.

There are self breathing silicone bungs, or just use the blowoff tube idea.

It will blow off gas when there is enough pressure to open the silicone stretchy valve.

I use the tinfoil on top of the carboy and conical all the time.

Blowoff is your best bet....how much room are you short by...I found the 3-piece airlocks are a little shorter...

one inch at the VERY most, my blowoff tube won't even fit. thought I heard JZ say you could use foil and it might help with pressure on the yeast. I suppose I could get a smaller blowoff - 1/4" and put it into the bung hole although it might get kinked.........my current blowoff fits snuggly into the whole opening-it's big. still I am curious about the foil...............
