Question about my Johnson....

Thu Jul 22, 2010 2:45 pm

I recently purchased a fridge and Johnson two-way controller. I have heard JZ and others talking about having two carboys at two different temps but how is this done. My controller can set the heat and cool at differnt temps but how does it work? Where does the probe go? What settings to I need to put in?

You need two separate controllers - the probe for the cooling goes on one, a second probe to trigger a heating blanket is attached to the warmer one as I understand it.

Not the most energy efficient way to do things, but it is space efficient if that is your issue.

There is more than one type of controller. Some are single stage - meaning that they control one device at a time. You can also get a two stage controller that will control two devices - a fridge on one and a heater on the other for instance. See here for an example of the two channel variety: http://morebeer.com/view_product/16664/ ... er_-_Wired

I have the two stage controller. Couldn't I set the cooling side to like 40 degrees and the heating to 60 degrees?

I have a ranco 2 stage controller and put the probe on the side of the carboy then tape bubble wrap over that to insulate it from the ambient air. I set mine using the settings detailed by Mylo in this thread: http://www.thebrewingnetwork.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=14746&hilit=ranco+2+stage

Honestly I don't see how you can keep 2 carboys at different temps with one temp probe.

I'm with Darkside. I think you need a controller for each carboy. But I could be completely wrong. This may seem obvious, but make sure to read the directions and the wiring diagram. I didn't do that, when I got mine and thought my controller wasn't working correctly. I felt like a :asshat: when I realized it was me was the problem. Thankfully I didn't call NB to ask them why it wouldn't control my heater!
