Repitching Q: Does smoked flavor stick to yeast?

Sun Jun 27, 2010 9:59 am

I'm brewing a heffeweizen as a starter to generate a big pitch of yeast for a hopfen weisse clone.

While at NHC I was told about harold gulbransons awesome smoked heffe. I would love to try it but I don't want smoke in the second beer.

Has anyone repitched from a smoked beer? Does it carry over to the next beer?

I can vaguely recall JZ saying that it won't have much of an affect repitching yeast from a smoked beer, but I can't remember where I heard it or why this was. Anyone remember?

I have pitched from a marzen to a rauchbier to a schwarzbier. Yes, there was smoke flavor in the schwarzbier.
