Target gravity

Wed Dec 30, 2009 12:07 pm

Riddle me this. What is the target gravity on this bill

8lb of domestic 2 row
1lb of 40 caramel
.5lb of roasted barley

for a 4.5 gallon batch?

I came up with around 256 pp 4 gl

or about 64 ppg ???

I'm assuming the target gravity should be around 1.064??? is my math right?

I don't know the calculations in my head, I use software still (it's been dead on) but I would say it a bit low depending on your efficiency. 8lbs 2 row is going to give you a lot of fermentables. That same bill on my rig would render close to 1.075

I don't know the math, either but I do know that you need to calculate your yield by your brewhouse efficiency. You have a maximum extract potential for sure but if you have a 75% efficiency, you have to multiply your max by 0.75.

What is 2-row PPPG? Other grains?

For 75% efficiency and pppg's of 1.036, 1.034, and 1.028 for the 2-row, C40, and roasted barley, respectively, in 4.5 gallons I get 1.056.

8x36=288
1x34=34
0.5x28=14

288+34+14=336

336/4.5=74.67

74.67x0.75=56

You happen to have a link or can you explain that math for me? Like I said, I'm a software dude. Interested in the calculation though.

Also would mash ratio factor in here?

Only with regard to efficiency which has probably already been calculated.

yes i used palmer's guide with a 80 percent effeciency that might be why my numbers a re a bit higher. I think I actually only had about 4 gl of wort left after the boil and i think that the gravity was around 1.06. Thanks! the guy at the brew shop thought the gravity would be around 1.08 or 1.09 but i knew better after i did a crude mathematical equation.
