Crash cooled and sucked in Star San.... HELP

Sat Dec 19, 2009 5:29 pm

OK, so when I crash cooled the carboy it sucked back the Star San and the some yeast from the blow off chamber. All and all about 2 pints into 5.5 G. What will this do to the taste. And more importantly is it still OK (read safe) to drink.

I'm pretty sure that Star San at the proper dillution is safe and does not impart any taste. Probably not the best scenario, but you are likely OK. Have to say I have never drank a pint or two of it.

Yeah you'll be fine. The acid in Star-San will be neutralized. And since you were crash cooling, you were done with fermenting anyway so no worries about killing the yeast. I doubt you'll notice any difference in taste, it's about like adding water. I've never seen such a pressure differential to suck up 2 pints though, what's up with that?

How about one of those little strile air filters on the end of a piece of tubing? Seems like you'd still be drawing air in with a bag and a rubber band?

I had this issue, I sucked a couple of pints of starsan into a beer I cold crashed as well. What I then did was to crash cool the bucket even more (like 34F) and pull the wort from the *bottom* of the vessel with a racking cane. As I racked, I tasted samples for the soapy taste of starsan, and stopped when it started tasting soapy.

My thinking was that the starsan probably pulled in pretty slow and might have stayed on top of the mixture. As starsan should have a much lower specific gravity than my beer (a mild with a FG of around 1.013), it should have stayed on the top of the bucket (like a layered shot). I feel like this worked pretty well, and the beer ended up taking third in its category in October. If the gravity trick kept me from getting soapy beer, or if it was evenly distributed and I tricked myself, I'm not sure. Let me know how you get on!

I thought you were crazy until I went out and checked my Vienna Lager in the chest freezer that I just crashed to 35deg. Guess what, bucket of water is lower and carboy is higher.... Crap! I think I used water in the blow off bucket and it looks like the water settled on top so I will rack off the bottom. Lesson learned, replace blow off hose with air lock before cold crashing.
Where did time go?
