reusing lager yeast

Sat Nov 28, 2009 10:05 am

i was just botteling some california common where i used fermentis t23 lager yeast.

i was going to reuse it, like ive done with my ale yeast.

once the beer was in the botteling bucket i poured some 3 liters of distilled water in the bottle, shaked it, and let it rest for 30 minutes. then i poured into a gallon bottle, but when i did then there was nothing left in the bucket, that is, nothing had fallen to the bottom like i'm used to when i do this with ale yeast.

is that because it is lager yeast?

my plan was to clean it and store in jars and use for upcoming lagers.

anyway, i closed the gallon bottle with alominium foil and put in in the refridgerator. going to give it some time and see if the yeast falls to the bottom.

I really think you would be better off just purchasing some new dried yeast for your lager rather than reusing from a dried yeast batch. Even if your sanitation is excellent, washing yeast can still introduce bacteria and other critters to the yeast you wish to save. Much easier to just buy a couple dried packets. Good luck though!

if i could i would.

the problem is that here in good old iceland, i cannot buy any lager yeast. my selection of beer yeast here is cooper ale yeast and fermentis s04 english ale.

i've been reusing my s04 and us05 without problems. the s23 did just behave a bit differently than the ale yeast, i was wondering if that is because it is bottom fermenting versus top fermenting like the ale yeast.

however, since then i've listened to the yeast rinsing podcast of brew strong. based on that i'm just going to split what i harvested in two batches and try to use it asap
