Mixing up your yeast varieties

Who here has played around with mixing up yeast varieties? For example, using a lager yeast in an ale recipe, or a cider yeast in a porter. Bear in mind, these are not specific suggestions, just random combinations off the top of my head.

Obviously you won't get a beer true to style, but will you generally get something nasty, or is this something worth experimenting with?

I'm trying to get a bunch of 4 liter bottles to do smaller experimental batches, and this is something I'd like to try. If something turns out tasty, I can scale it up to a 5 gallon batch.

i've done this a couple of times..primary with wlp 001 and then add a big dosage of some dark sugar, usually jaggery and then add a wine yeast...it's something worth trying...

i've also like using wlp 001 and the dry english ale yeast in tandom, both pitched into the primary, you get some nice esters and good attenuation...just my .02 Drew

I've use WLP004 in a batch of apple jack. it came out damn good. and I've used champagne yeasts in different varieties of beer. just try to match the yeast profile to what you want to add to your style of beer. not too radical, but I like using some Belgium strains in some of my stouts.
