Temp controller question

Wed Apr 29, 2009 2:10 pm

So I got's me a temp controller.

Before plugging in this really simple device, do I need to do anything to my fridge? Do I need to pump up the temp controller of the fridge to maximum? Minimum? Don't touch it?
On tap at the LAB.

I believe my ranco 'howtousefortards-sheet' said to turn it up to maximum, and then hook the bojangle up. You'll be cookin', well, coolin' in no time.

I use a Johnson A419 with a standard modern fridge. I found that if I wanted to get the thing on the colder side...say like 36 degrees F or so, I had to turn the usual fridge controller knob a bit past its usual 12 o'clock position. Maybe to the 1 or 2 o'clock position. Otherwise it wasn't able to reach that colder temperature. But for normal lagering (45F-50F) I can just leave it on the stock setting. I'm also a fan of a long-ish ASD setting, like 5 minutes. I figure modern appliances are probably more duty cycle-tolerant but I don't see the need to stress the thing out unnecessarily with a short ASD value.

And just for i-dunno-why's sake I also keep a large plastic tub of tap water frozen in the freezer to help retain some sort of thermal (or lack thereof) mass in the freezer. Something in my head told me that it might help stabilize temperatures a bit more and use less energy in the long run. But I had probably consumed a few homebrews at that point. :?:

I've got mine set on maximum. The controller is going to override it anyway. You have the Johnson or the Ranco?
