yeast starter

Ok. Doing a Maibock this weekend and wanted to do my first starter tonight to pitch tomorrow afternoon. Mr. Malty's pitching calculator says I need to do a 1.5 gallon starter. This is way bigger than I thought I would have to do. I only have a 1/2 gallon growler that I was going to use to do the starter. Should I go pick up a bigger vessel? I'm very confused. OG of the brew is 1.064. Using WLP 830 for yeast. Can someone help out an :asshat: ?

Your other choice is to get one or two more vials of yeast. Otherwise, you would also need a few days to get that growth in that larger vessel. Lager pitching rates are a bitch. Get used to it!

According to the Pope's calculator, you could use 3 vials ( pricey, I know ) and shake the sucker from time to time and get away with a 2 liter starter.

+1 on more vials. Or you could get a 3 gallon carboy and do a starter in that guy. Then you would have a carboy for experimental batches, lager starters, and strange wines.
Good luck this weekend.
Cheers! :jnj

Shit.

OK. Thanks for the help. I'm guessing that after I make this monster starter I decant off any liquid before pitching right? Also, some yeast nutrient would be good? I sound like villiam. :asshat: Life was so simple when I just dumped my smack pack into some wort, but I really like Maibock.
