If you can't get a lager down to 44F using a Wort chiller can you put it into a fridge without any harm to the beer an use the coldness of the fridge to cool it to the 44F an then pitch the yeast ?????

Yes you can do this. Some folks say they worry about infection, but if you feel your sanitation is pretty good, you can do it and pitch after it has cooled off.
