Re: White Labs or Wyeast

One LHBS that I shop said that the White Labs rep ensures that the stock is maintained fresh. In other words, the rep comes into the store, takes out the old product, and replaces it with new at no- or little cost to the store. They complained that they didn't get the same service from Wyeast, and so they stopped carrying Wyeast brand. Unfortunately, I've received some old Wyeast packets from stores that I ordered from online. And not-so-surprisingly, the fermentation from starter to final batch was less than desirable. Had I known I would be shipped a packet of yeast that was 10 months old, I would have ordered elsewhere. And once this happens to you once, that's enough to make you switch. So is this the fault of Wyeast or the retailer? I would argue both. The retailer shouldn't carry product that is sub-par, and Wyeast should make it as convenient as possible for the retailers to sell good product to maintain their own reputation.
That said, I still use both White Labs and Wyeast because of their strain differences. I can easily go to the LHBS and expect to find current fresh stock of White Labs. But I ONLY purchase Wyeast from online stores with high turnover of stock, like Northern Brewer or William's Brewing.

I've got to ask: Who is Bub and what is his advice WRT 3068? I have sort of lost my taste for Weizens but I used to love them and this was my favorite strain - always gave me the things I thought should be in a Weizen and won me several ribbons (and I seldom enter competitions). I do remember it as being quite "active" (practically chases you out of the room after you pitch it) but other wise never thought it was peculiar in any way. I always heard that you couldn't repitch it but never tried.

Bub used to be feared on the forums for his blunt statements of opinion. He's not as active as he used to be, though he insists Wyeast 3068 is the only hefeweiss yeast. Having tried it, I agree. If you wish to see Bub on the forums, mention that you want to use WLP380. :asshat:

I have always preferred the Wyeast packaging - I think it is easier to get the cells in suspension. Shaking up one of those WL vials and unscrew that cap and I never know what is going to happen.

I also like the, in my opinion, many different VSS that Wyeast puts out. White Labs seems to have the same ones they put out every year.

I have to say that I'm with you guys on this though there are other strains I've tried that approach it pretty closely.

They have the date printed right on the package. 10 month old yeast would have poor results.

All of what you guys makes sense. The home brew shop i use carries both yeast (more Wyeast then WL) but I can see how they would mostly carry one or the other.

Freshness is my main concern. However, my LHBS is a brewery and they don't really concentrate a lot of effort on the homebrew supplies. So, I order my ingredients in bulk and yeast online. Being that I order online, I try to order yeast from a retailer as close to me as possible because I want to reduce the shipment time (retailer to me). That limits the brand I can buy from. Currently, I found a homebrew shop with an online store that can get yeast to me one day regular ground shipping via Ups. They carry White Labs. I have used Wyeast in the past and my only beef with Wyeast is that I had to take extra care in making my starter by sanitizing the outside of activator pack. With white labs this isn't necessary because the yeast doesn't come in contact with the outside (you unscrew the cap and pour). I don't even buy much yeast lately, I re-harvest via top cropping. I would like to know if anyone here has top cropped similar strains from both yeast companies and have data to compare.
