Well, like I said, I have read a lot about trying to reduce oxidation. One way that people seem to go about that is to fill their carboys with C02. The same people tend to airate(for the sake of their yeast) but do so through a micro filter(as I do). I do intend to get a kegging system once finances allow, but in the mean time, I enjoy a good hack. Exploring cheap alternates is actually fun for me. I think that it's a good question: Are there alternatives for reducing the risk of oxydation when transferring wort to the carboy besides filling with C02? I am curious to know what people have tried...

If you were so inclined to use a "secondary" [cough] brite tank [/cough] - your beer would benefit by purging with CO2 (or some other heavy inert gas).

ahh i see, guess thats why I dont secondary any more, just crash it and go. I just turn the temp controller down to 45 and let it set for a couple days. Secondary schmecondary.

Helium definately would be difficult to use effectively.

Cheap alternatives? Heavier than air? Propane!

Flammability issues aside, propane is used as a food safe propellant in many products. It's heavier than air, cheap, and is easy to detect by smell (i.e. it's easy to know when your carboy is full).

Recommend using a propane torch attached to a small portable propane bottle.

Standard disclaimers apply: don't use near your hot water tank/furnace pilot, don't smoke, don't play with matches, etc.

...or a new instant heat sterilization technique ;) forget the soaking in chemicals; fill with propane, ignite, brew!
