Re: Stepping up Starter plan for a D. Alt

Well the first step of the starter went very well. I was surprised given the low viability of the smack pack by the amount of yeast at the bottom of the flask, it looked like a normal amount or even more compared to other starters I've made with a higher viability rate. The second step had a slight problem, it blew out the top considerably. By the time it stopped and I cold crashed it I really wasn't sure by the looks of the yeast at the bottom of the flask whether I gained much. So note to self, second step use a bigger container. I don't know if that was due to the yeast being Wyeast 1007, which I've never used before but have read else where that it really goes, which it is doing currently in the alt. Due to the loss of yeast at the second step I decided to add another smack pack, just to make sure I had enough yeast. I'm pretty sure that I didn't over pitch since it's a hybrid beer. It's happy chugging along at 59-60 degrees.
