Who here has played around with mixing up yeast varieties? For example, using a lager yeast in an ale recipe, or a cider yeast in a porter. Bear in mind, these are not specific suggestions, just random combinations off the top of my head.
Obviously you won't get a beer true to style, but will you generally get something nasty, or is this something worth experimenting with?
I'm trying to get a bunch of 4 liter bottles to do smaller experimental batches, and this is something I'd like to try. If something turns out tasty, I can scale it up to a 5 gallon batch.
