Should I use my starter?

Thu Nov 05, 2009 10:55 pm

I'm getting ready to brew 15 gallons of American Pale Ale this coming Saturday and am slightly concerned regarding one of my starters. I made up 4L of starter wort and split it into two 2L flasks. Yesterday morning I pitched one vial of WLP002 to each flask and they've been doing their thing on stir plates. I checked them this evening and one starter is smelling like it should, the other is a little sulfury. Thinking back to when I pitched the vials, I decanted a little from the flask that is sulfury. I'm pretty diligent in my sanitization regimen (hot pbw and then starsan) but could I have infected the starter?

Have you guys experienced any sulphur aromas with WLP002? I was looking at the Morebeer forum and some had the issue with 001. However, I'm considering picking up a couple of vials to use in place of the questionable starter. What do you guys think?

what temperature are they at? some yeasts will throw sulphur at low temperatures.

Yeah, I've brewed lagers before and gotten the characteristic sulfur aroma. The beers turned out great.

The two flasks are sitting at room temp, so ~ 65-70 F. Not sure it is a temp issue as there are two starters and one of them smells fine. But, anything is possible.

well if one smells good and the other doesn't I'd probably just stick with the good smelling one and toss the other. besides, what's the cost of buying another vial vs throwing out an entire batch?
