Did my first lager - its a disaster so far

Sat Jun 06, 2009 6:44 am

check this out right - I bought the Kolch kit from Northern Brewer. About 1/3 through the boil I am filling out my brew log and realize that the temp for Wyeat #2565 is 56-64F

buy now it is way to late to abort so like any good home brewer, out come the shelves of my refrigerator. Old ketchup mayo and anything else that is taking up needed space gets thrown out - Realizing that my dirty fridge is a bad place for a fermenter, out come my kegs from my kegerator and into my fridge they go

So now, my first lager is siting is what was my kegerator and my kegs are sitting in my fridge next to the milk

Thank GOODNESS my girlfriend is visiting here parents for a month - I should have this mess cleaned up by then

You know what they say,

"You're not hardcore unless you have a keg full of homebrew next to a gallon of milk and a pork chop"

Nice - keep going! By the way, if you use a sealed fermenter, the cleanliness of the fridge should not matter.

Make sure you're able to control the temp well, cause if you just toss the fermenter in there down to low temps right away your yeast will throw up protien coats and quit on you

Its been 3 days and looks like I have a good fermentation going so far - its much slower than I'm used to with the ales but I'm sure that is expected

and the kegerator is a chest freezer that I have a Johnson Controls temp controller hooked up to

I was thinking that I should wrap all my carboys with insulation even the ones fermenting at ale temps - I imagine that when the fridge or freezer turns on, its blowing much colder air then the preset on the controller

I have one upright fridge and one chest freezer that I have exclusively for home brew but they happen to be full at the time - I didn't realize that the Kolsch was a lager when I ordered it, i was planning to do the carboy in the bucket with water trick to keep it cool until I saw it needed to be at Lager temps
