You probably already thought of this, but some of the first times when I checked the FG it would also read high. The CO2 bubbles in and around the hydrometer actually kept it up! Make sure you swirl it around to dislodge any bubbles and check again. You may find the "new" gravity reading is now 4-5 points lower.
