Greetings from the land of new hops!

Sun Feb 24, 2008 11:39 am

Greetings all! I have listened for almost the entire run of the show (yes, all of them, including the one we don't mention) and have just now gotten around to getting on the forums.
A little about myself:
I live in Corvallis, OR. For those of you who don't know, that is where a lot of new hops species are created, such as, Willamette, Cascade, Mt. Hood, Newport, etc., etc. I have been homebrewing for about 5 years and have just recently built 70qt all grain mash-tun out of a cooler and some PvE pipe. Up until this, I have been doing a lot of extract with specialty grains, mini-mashes, and stovetop mashes. I am also building a stir plate right now, but can't seem to get the magnet to balance right. I think it has something to do with the fact that my flask is convex bottomed and my stir-bar isn't big enough (1/2inch or so for a 1 liter erlenmyer). I try to brew on average every other week or so.

On the subject of turtles....

I have long suspected that JP loves turtles only because they relate to a phenomenon known as "turtling" when you can't get to the bathroom quick enough....

Get a handle on it, Mylo.... I am going to plant probably 5-10 bines this year and hopefully more next year. I get my rhizomes from Dave Wills, the guy who runs Fresh Hops and owns the Oregon Trail Brewery here in town. Unfortunately, I think I am going to have to look a bit farther afield to find the aroma varieties I want like Cascade....Maybe if I just go over to the USDA hops research facility here in town, they might have some for the taking.. ;-) Hopefully all of the demand from homebrewers and craftbrewers during these hard times will convince the big growers to plant more aroma varieties.
If you haven't seen it yet, check out the hops substitution chart in BYO this last month to get good ideas for subbing.
