Brewing in Central New York

Tue Aug 28, 2007 1:58 pm

Hello BNers! I've been lurking in the shadows here for a few months, listening on podcasts, and finally thought I'd jump in and meet some of the locals...

I've been brewing off and on for a couple years, still on extract and minimash. I'm slowly investing in the equipment necessary for all grain(i.e. sneaking equipment in the house behind the wife's back). I'm also trying to convince her of the need for a keg system... wish me luck on that!

I'm in central New York, a solid hour from a decent local homebrew shop, although I've already become a B3 customer. The good thing is I'm only 20 minutes from Saranac (FX Matt Brewery), and only an hour and a half from Cooperstown and Ommegon!!!

Currently I'm fermenting an excellent IPA, and I've got in the fridge a Russian Imperial Stout, Hefeweizen, California Common, IPA, and I think I have a bottle of unlabeled ordinary bitter...

I can't wait for my first reply from Bub!!!

Anyone else nearby? Or am I officially in the BN militia? Is there a BN Army Corp of Engineers?

sneaking it past the wife only works for so long.... hehe double entandre!
I find that small purchases confuse them... buy a 20 dollar keg here with some your normal ingredients... then it sneaks up on them like an accidental blumpkin.

My wife was thrilled when she learned that a)kegs all fit in one fridge instead of closet full of cases and b)she wasn't forced to help me bottle every few weeks.

So just enlist her as a bottling assistant and if she says that the bottles take up too much room just promise to take care of it. then buy a kegging system.

I lived in Utica when going to college. I was up on business for two Saranac Thursdays in June. While FX Matt makes mediocre beer, they know how to throw one hell of a party. I'm south on the PA border.

Wow! Now that was one hell of a welcome Push! Now I feel all warm and fuzzy inside, kind of like when I was 7, and that nice stranger offered me a candy bar...

As for Saranac, they've got a party like no other around here every Thursday night. Its a really cool brewery tour too. The beer isn't stellar, I admit, but it is local, and they know how to support the community.

Push and Bub responding in my first day! They're Forum Heroes!!! Now I feel important! Or is that impotent... Dammit Bub!!! What did you do to me!
