1 more Crescent City member (New Orleans to the uninitiated)

Fri Jul 27, 2007 10:30 am

Yet another New Orleans member here, sweltering in the Southeast Louisiana heat.

I've recently gotten my first Ipod, and have become addicted to the beer podcasts I've found online. That's led me to the Brewing Network. I saw TBN's setup at the 2006 NHC in Orlando, and didn't know anything about it. Now all I can say is I've been missing out.

I have to echo Coonass' comments regarding the beer scene down here. Since "The Event" at the end of August 2005, the beer scene has gotten much worse. The only homebrew shop in town closed, and the closest homebrew shop that's open, to my knowledge, is in Pensecola, or maybe Shreveport. All mail order, but you do what you have to do.

Anyway, been brewing for 10 years now, doing all grain for... 5. My wife gave me a homebrew kit for Christmas at the end of '97, and I wonder if she'd do it again if she knew how I'd latch on to this hobby. Well, you gotta have some sort of hobby, and this one gives you beer. Man I love that.

So, I'm glad to be here. This looks like it should continue to be a blast.

To quote JZ, "Brew Strong".

Welcome! I hear ya on the Ipod thing. We just got back from a road trip to North Carolina & I wore out my I-pod listening to BN archives... luckily my wife enjoys the shows too. As I was sitting on the cabin porch, drinking beer, listening to the river flow, not wanting to have to go back to work, I thought "Hmmm, I should quit my job & open a home-brew supply shop back in New Orleans." I'm gonna keep pondering that one!

homebrew shops in N.O.

Mon Aug 06, 2007 6:33 pm

Yeah Coonass, I hear you about the homebrew shop. I fully understand Elvis' issues with his shop after "the event" (btw, "the event" is Hurricane Katrina, August 29, 2005). I can't remotely blame him for closing down, as the population base here was decimated, but nothing replaces face to face questions and immediate access when you have a brewing emergency (like a broken carboy, which I have personal experience with).

I expect one will open back up at some point, but it's a mail order world for now.
