New one from Sweden

Fri Nov 09, 2012 9:28 am

Hi, I´m a total newbie, here in the forum and in the home brewing world and just want to announce my arrival and say hello. I live in the northern part of Sweden (born and raised) in a small town called Östersund. My experience in brewing is all theoretical, I have not brewed a single batch, and I blame my medical laboratory background, I want to be sure about everything before i do anything, then i stumbled upon The BN and decided "stop reading and just do it". So after some investing i´m about to brew my first ever batch, 5gal. all grain x-mas ale (or something) Cheers

Welcome. As Justin always says, "just mix some sugar and water and yeast together".

Good luck in your first brew!!!

Thank you for the welcome, I´m currently drilling several hundred holes in a 30L fermenter bucket and dry brewing with Beersmith. I have set the date for my first brew day to the 24/11 and I have yet not decided on a recipe, I want it to be "my recipe" so i´m checking out X-mas recipes and taking notes, only problem is that I don't know shit about all the different malt flavors, I´m just relying on the descriptions. Still this is going to be fun, if it tastes like crap, fine. And if it doesn't, fine, i´ts just beer.

Take a look at these 3 pages:
They give short descriptions of a very wide variety of ingredients used in brewing.

http://byo.com/resources/grains
http://byo.com/resources/hops
http://byo.com/resources/yeast

Then try looking at some clone recipes of beers you might be familiar with.

http://www.brew365.com/

Try to correlate back and forth to see what each ingredient is adding to the recipe.
That way you can get an idea of what they do and what typical amounts to at least
start off with when you want to start formulating your own recipes.
