If your first batch is shit don't give up, brew again and watch your sanitation. If your fermenter is empty then fill it again. It sucks to run out of homebrew.

The kit I bought is a nut brown ale. I don't see that one turning to crap very easily. I'm picky with beer, but not if I'm the one making it. It's like cooking: the fact that I made it adds some kind of extra flavor that makes it taste better to me than it might actually taste to the rest of the world.

Yeah, I worked in food for three years, I'm mildly OCD (not joking, I SHOULD receive treatment), so sanitation is something I kept up with BIG time. Even if my cat SNIFFED the equipment, I re-sanitized it. After kicking the cat out of the kitchen.

Brown ale is a perfect choice for a first brew. It has enough flavor to hide all the little flaws that may be there.
