Greetings from SE Alaska

:bnarmy: Hey friends. I am stoked to be getting drunk on my 8th homebrew: a Belgian Pale Ale from Brewing Classic Style's recipe. It is so good that I figured I would get off my lazy ass and start contributing here. I am in the Coast Guard up in Sitka, Alaska, home of Baranof Island Brewing Co. Hopefully I will be retiring here.

I'm interested in starting a homebrew club here, and I want to brew for a living, whether it is at Baranof or on my own.

The Brewing Network is my homebrew club for now. I have learned about half of what I know from listening to The Session, BS, and Can you Brew It? most of the rest came from Palmer's Bible.

Currently I am mashing in a Coleman cooler and wrestling with 27F temps outside. My brew kit is from Williams Brewing and I added a 5gal Carboy so that I could do a secondary. The secondary's main purpose is to free up my plastic bucket so I can brew more.

The cold temps here have inspired me in two directions: 1) I want to lager and 2) I want a brew stand with that Tower of Power I keep hearing about. I can't wait for my next batch!

Cheers all!

Welcome to the BN! Lots of folks here to help you with any brewing questions you may have and entertain you in the process.

I do have a tip that might help with your mashing in cold temperature problem. In the winter, I do my mash indoors in a big cooler. To heat the water I use a bucket heater like this. Depending on where you buy one, they run $30-$50 plus any shipping.

It is slow to get water up to strike temperature since it's only 1000 watts (about an hour) but you don't have to worry about the temperature dropping too fast. I only lose about 2° during an hour mash. YMMV.

Hey man! Welcome! Sounds like lagers are right up your alley in that weather. Always fun to hear from people outside of the lower 48!

Cheers-
