Drunk

Fri May 12, 2006 8:36 am

Ive posted a few times here and decided I might as well introduce myself.

The username ubriaco is Italian for drunk, so you can guess my heritage.

I have been a brewer for 4 years now, and went all grain after about 10 batches, Im on batch 108 or something now. A year ago I moved to 10 gallon batches and now can make 15 gal batches (although I probably never will, big batches means less brewing).

My fiancee is my brewing partner, and we focus on IPAs and anything Belgian. Not to say I dont like other styles, but we decided a while ago, why brew anything but your favorites ( we do make other stuff like porters and stouts etc. but that only accounts for about 5% of our yearly output). By the way I have never met an alcoholic beverage I didnt like, they all have....well.....alcohol.

found out about TBN from a little card that came with a sack of grain from NB a while ago and have listened to all the archives since. We have a 5ft tall wooden penguin that stands next to my kegorator that had its head cutoff and made into a hookah 10 years ago, that lends its name to our brewery. Although now the cavity in his head only houses my tap handles.

My profession is plant molecular genetics, and I am a PhD student. Also in my M.S. I was trained as a barley breeder, so that brings an interesting perspective to brewing.

anyway, all of you are freaking hilarious and I enjoy reading the posts and listening thoroughly.

HI VINNIE...

very nice to meet you here on the forum...

I like in particular about you already:
- your name
- the fact that your fiance is your brew-partner (I like it when women enter sucessfully male dominated areas  )
- you are a barley breeder....

Sounds very interesting....

Prost

Sorry, Im a computer idiot, I have no idea how to post pictures on these things. the penguin does still have a head, its just it and part of his body is hollow, with various holes drilled where things like a slide and hoses would come out.

and yes Daniela, I love that my fiancee is intersted in brewing too, I read the forums about SWMBO all the time really realize how lucky I am

welcome man! I'm single right now, but will be searching for a gal like your own. She's out there! I might have to import one from germany like justin tho.

and yet again like Speyedr said "This thread is useless without pics"

you can figure it out!

A lot of users on ths site use http://www.photobucket.com It is a free service where you can literally DUMP all of the photos you want to post. Once they are up there, click the photo you want to post so it is the only thing in your browser. Copy the link in your address bar. Then in your post, click the "Img" button, paste the link, and then click the "Img" button again. Presto, pics in the thread...

Sounds confusing, but try it once and you'll see it's pretty simple.

I WANNA SEE YOUR PENGUIN!

OK there is the penguin, the piece of paper is covering the letters of my fraternity. Story there is the guy who actually made this into a hookah wanted it back after he gave it to me two years earlier (what kind of giver?). To stop that from happening I painted the letters on so anyone who saw him try to remove it would kick his ass. That was about 7 years ago, but why paint over them now.

Image

That is the view with his head off, the two holes in the back are where the hoses would go for inhalation. The cavity is perfectly sized for a 2L bottle plus reinforcement so it doesnt collapse upon sucking. You can see my tap handles in there now.

Image

That is the view into his head. The middle hole is useless, it goes nowhere, but the side hole is where you would put the slide housing for the bowl on the top outside of the head.

Image

That sits next to the penguin almost indefinitely. It is a 6L ehrlenmyer flask with an air injection. It is always running stealing another yeast, or blowing up a culture for the weekend.

That is the kegorator that is on the other side of the penguin

Some of the equipment

I still bottle sometimes

These guys im particularly proud of. The far right is 6gal of peche that was brewed in late july, mighty tasty. The middle is a lemon lambic, yes lemon, made in august, funny thing is it smells like pine sol but tastes wonderful. It will be making a trip to my garage when the heat gets up to cook up some of its acids. The left is a 10gal batch of Flanders red ale, brewed in august also, tasty, but needs more acid.

Image

The guy on the right is a 1.090 Belgian strong ale (very tasty, ready to go) the left is a 1.090 Belgian dubbel or strong dark or something my fiancee made by herself, I was deathly ill and couldnt help so I just watched her make it.

Image

11+ gallons of IPA, half will be going on a weeklong fishing trip in june

Image

10gal of saison, using a yeast blend of 3/4 Dupont 1/4 WY1388, delicious. Half of this will also go fishing with us too.

there you have it, enjoy
