I was brewing 10 gallons of Berliner Weisse tonight while listening to the archives. I think it was the information-bereft Superbowl show. Anyway, I swirled up my yeast starter and poured it in the bucket. "Thump" went the stir bar when it hit the bottom of the fermenter.
Two minutes later I heard the warning in the podcast about doing just that.
Can you guys synch the podcasts to my brewing activities a little more accurately please?

I did the exact same thing the day before the Superbowl!

Luckily, I was using a V-vessesl conical and it ended up in the collection ball for easy retrieval.

Monday was the first time in my last 6 brew sessions that I didn't drop my stir bar into the fermenter. I still need to rack a couple of brews to get my other stir bars back.

Wouldn't a magnet on the outside of the glass keep the thing from falling in while you pour the starter?
Just wondering...

Getting a stir bar retriever (Cynmar and the like sells them) or a stir bar arrester probably isn't a bad idea. I don't use anything like those at home, but in the lab I use a stir bar retriever. A stir bar arrester like the one in the following link would probably be even better, since there is no contact with the starter wort.

That said, it only helps if you actually remember to use it, haha.

That is exactly my problem! I have all sorts of big magnets around the house.
