I haven't listened to Sunday's show yet (I looking for it now) so I may not not the question entirely. I would agree with Lufah that in a batch sparge system, the filter system (for lack of a better term) whether it be a Bazooka Screen, slotted copper tubing, braided SS or a FB, should not make a difference on the efficiency as long as it is able to extract the same quantity of wort. That's because the wort has been completely homogenized with respect to the available sugar before draining.
I tried the batch sparging method (Denny, who poularized it is a good friend of mine) but I never saw the efficiency he gets nor the time savings. But then, my system was designed around making brewing easy so there wasn't much room for batch sparging to improve. I suspect the efficiency difference is just a matter of grain crush and that in general, fly sparging should be slighty more efficient.
Ack, Sunday's show isn't up yet!
