My thoughts are if you want access to the archive then you have to be a monthly donor of any amount. Let’s face it, if you can't afford two dollars, then you probably shouldn't be drinking beer. I think even a possible new recruit would pay two dollars a month for over a 1000hrs of content....

The point is, what new brewer will pay any amount of money for a podcast when there's so many out there for free? I'd be more inclined to download Basic Brewing Radio, BrewCrAzY, Final Gravity and Australian Craftbrewer looking for something in my style before spending money albeit only $2-5 on something I know nothing about.

.... I'd hate to think of a day where on a Sunday night I couldn't kick back and enjoy the asshattery of the BN.

Me too. But if we want the BN to grow any further, this path is the wrong way to go.

There are really two issues here right?

1. The technical/financial issue related to downloads. This is solved by removing older downloads from itunes. If a new user comes on board and hits "download all" and they only get the last month's worth, that's going to by lots and lots better than downloading years worth and should fix the bandwidth problem. Right?

2. The second issue is funding the BN. This can be done however works best including dovetailing this issue in with the previous issue. However it's done, I'm certain no one wants to decrease the listernership of the BN's shows and podcasts.

In my area of the beer business, a tap/bottle/homebrew shop in a town of 10K people, or any small business for that matter, price adjustments are a necessity, and some people alwaysend up bitching about the change. We instituted a corkage fee for drinking packaged beers in the shop (and using a glass that needs to be washed), and though some folks bitched about it, most of the vocal people supported it because they know we run a small business that runs on expenses, and the ability to pay for those expenses (rent, inventory, wages).
"$3 pint night" is one of the biggest nights of the week for the bar portion of our business, with some customers that specifically show up for the cheaper price on our 12 taps, and still more mention how they would really like it if we always had $3 pints. To all of them I usually say, "Thanks for showing up when the pints are $4.50, since that's one of the ways we stay open. Free beers, or even $3 pints are not the way we'll stay in business, they're just a really great way to recruit new customers".

Having limited FREE content is a great way to recruit new listeners, but I can't help but support putting a price on the merchandise that you've offered up so freely for so many years. Cheap fuckers are cheap fuckers, but if they can afford to homebrew while at the same time claiming they can't stand the idea of limited free content (all or nothing), then they must not have been really valuable listeners in the first place, imo.

Brew and Broadcast Strong, but don't forget to pay the bills.

PS: I just signed on as a Sergeant in the BNA :bnarmy: to help pay my way as a listener, and to help with some portion of the streaming that goes out as free content. If we can write a check for Public Radio once a year, we can sure as fuck write a check for the Brewing Network.

Cheers,
Todd

I am sure I have heard it mentioned in the past, but I am a donater but would like to own the entire backcatalog.
Just like all the albums of your favourite band.

We could have every year in the BN Store, then I would have all of them on DVD and could refer to them as needed.
More money to the BN and no longer need to hit the BN server when I want to refer back to an older show.

I know some people might like a break down of what is on each show, on the disc cover.
But this could be sorted out by the BN army without any hassle to the BN.
It does not need to be anything flash, just a printed contents.

The beauty of these is all the BN needs is a stack of blank DVDs and then can just burn them as they ordered and print out a contents/cover sheet.
They could even be made for download and just the DVD gets sent out.

The tight wads will still do what they do and keep hitting the server bandwidth
But the true BN army will be supporting and have a nice 'offical' collection.

You could do something similar as above, but even remove the CD, when you purchase you receive a download link that is good for 24 hours or something, then you don't even have to mail anything out. I have purchased software this way before and it works well. As stated above then you could remove the archives from iTunes and reduce your download numbers. I also agree with above that you should do a year of shows as one download.

If there is a pay to download model or pay for CD model we could encourage people to copy and/or post the files to different servers. This would take the load off the BN server. I would be glad to host all the show I have appeared on as long as the files were not linked to ITunes and only available from a direct link from the BN web site. I have three servers that are under-utilized.
