Earlier today the NOAA (National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration) reported the second largest solar flare in recorded history. The resulting coronal mass ejection has already caused some disruption in radio transmissions and power grid problems.
What does this geeky astronomical stuff mean to us? Try taking a look to the North after 1:00 a.m. Friday morning. The Northern Lights should be visible as far South as Northern California, Colorado and Kansas. If you are up you should go take a look.
If you are a ham radio operator, like me, there should be the opportunity for some bizarre radio wave propagation ( like talking to folks in Russia and China using less than 5 watts power on a frequency band that is normally good for about 50 miles maximum range).
Have fun night owls!
