Hello from Mort again

It’s been a busy time for me ever since I talked to all of you last. After chores last night, I got to messing around with some of my beer gear. Somebody, I don’t remember who, wised me up that the extra ball valves are for the beer kegs. That is correct, they both have the correct nipple to screw them directly into the keg. I even started up the cooker and heated some water. I don’t know why, just something to do, I guess. Then I got curious about that wort cooler, so I threw that in, hooked up the hose and let it rip. Being a numbskull, I didn’t think about needing another hose strung out for the water coming out of the coil. Boy, did that make a mess. I didn’t want to get out another hose, so I decided to let that go. I drained the hose and gave up on that project. I was smart enough to drain the copper coil, too.

This morning, I had to go pump out a septic tank and was going to be close to town anyway, so I went to the hardware store where my nephew Tim works. He said he does have a digital camera, but will be gone this weekend. Me and the Mrs are going over there tonight for supper and Tim is going to take a picture of me to put on this forum so you will know I am a real person. I don’t understand why some of you think I am pulling your leg. What would I have to gain by doing that? Are you always this suspicious of new people to this sight?

Somebody said to me welcome to this obsession of brewing beer. I am beginning to think this is correct. I have really liked talking on here to you people and even though I have not made my own beer yet, I think about it all the time. While I was in town today, I decided I should ask at the bars about bottles. I am not much of a bar person, so I got some funny looks when I went in there. The first bar I went into I spoke to the owner and he said he would save the good bottles for me. The second bar wanted to charge me, so I said no thanks. At the last bar, the man was real nice and said he would also save me bottles. While I was there, I ran into the lady I got the brewing gear from. She waits tables in there. It was dinner time, so I decided to get me a hamburger and ask her some questions. She didn’t know much about the brewing. She said it was all her husband’s doings. I did ask her about the bottles and she said they did not move bottles from Washington state. She did say that he had won some prizes for his beer and they might be in the boxes of stuff. I have not run across anything like that yet. I felt sorry for the woman because her husband had left her here on her own. She has people around here, but still is on her own. She might have a hard time getting another man around here. I was feeling even worse because the Mrs had talked her down on the price for the beer gear, so I gave her forty dollars for my lunch and told her to keep the change. I have not felt that good in a long time.

Now I’m back home and going to order my beer supplies. I learned enough to know to start out with ales. That should make me a good beer to start with. I will be closing out for today, because I have to get the chores done early so we can go to supper at Milt’s (my brother). I am just about ready to start asking more brewing questions as the day gets closer.

I will talk to you later.

It's nothing personal Mort. It's just that we mess with each other so much around here that we can't help but be suspicious. As others have pointed out, you touched on some inside jokes. For instance, you said you prefer Coors Light and Miller Lite. We call beers like this Budmillercoors, because they are mass produced swill, to us. This is ONLY because we have all tasted many other beers and have developed a taste for better beer. Obviously, if the Budmillercoors was THAT bad they wouldn't sell so much of it.

Anyway, I'm prepared to just accept that you are who you say you are, and so are most of the folks 'round here. Besides, if you're not it'll be a good laugh.

Good brewing!

Ok, so now there is a real picture of me. Tim tried to help me do the hat thing, but we were having no luck and it's getting late. Good night.

Nice pic Mort, I'm still trying to find one.

While on the bottle search make sure you get the pop off bottles. The screw on's don't work so well from what I've heard. On the other hand I've heard of folks bottling in plastic soda bottles. If you have a capper w/ the stuff you got, I'd think it would be best to use the pop off top bottles.

You know, that's not a bad question. Can you use the screw top bottles? It seems to me that it would not make a seal worth a shit. Anybody have any experience w/ it?

Yep,

Back in the days when I was brewing just prehopped, no boil Coopers kits. I used screw top 375 ml bottles plenty of times. They worked fine. I found the occasional one that hadn't sealed properly, but I was using a "hit it with a mallet" style capper back then, so I probably just did it badly.

You can also buy special crown seals that are apparently a litle bit softer than the normal ones and crimp into the thread of the screw cap bottles a bit more effectively. They work really well.

Having said that however, as I built up my collection of bottles, I slowly swapped away from the screwcaps until I had nothing but pop offs left. i just like the little "ceremony" involved in having to open your bottle with an opener. Seems a little bit more respectful towards tha beer and makes you appreciate it more.

Mort, if you can get pop off bottles, great. But if you can only get screwcap bottles, in my experience they should be just fine. As brancid said, you can even cap in old plastic soda bottles as long as you rinse them really well until neither the bottles or the lids smell like soda anymore.

Almost all the modern bottles are a bit thin and weak though, they are only designed to be used once by the brewery, then crushed. So I only use mine a few times before I chuck em away and swap them for newer ones.

Happy brewing. Your going to like it a lot.

In this month's BYO Mag they answer this very question. Seems that here in the US the screw top bottles ( and many of the pop tops) are made for one-time use only. They say you CAN do it, and you don't even need special caps, just the bottles, but be careful cause the neck is thin and using a standard capper can break it on really cheap bottles.

Doesn't seem worth it to me.

huh, Who knew!!!

So are the bottles one would buy at the homebrew show made for reuse? Or should we just brake down and buy the good 'ol brown swing tops. I sure like those swing tops but the brown ones cost almost as much as the green ones do, and the green ones come w/ beer already in them.

Hell, the fact is, I'd be better off kegging anyway.

So, in order to solve this, everyone should collect 2 kegging systems and ship them off to NumbSkull and me...oh and a conical would be nice too. :P
