I had a hell of a time with the chat and after a full system restore and a shit load of lost things on my hard drive, I found a solution. When I was in the chat and someone would enter their chatline, I would get a dismiss icon that would keep me from posting. I tried to talk to everyone that might have known anything, with no luck. I even contacted java with no response. But finally I figured it out. It was a window that said "dismiss" and that was it.
Go to the chat and lo in as usual. With shit going on just right click anywhere in the window and you'll see a drop menu. Click on the "pop up notifyer" or what ever it's called. That will make it go away. Just don't do like me and wipe everything clean. I feel like such a tool.
