Kaboom!

Last night about midnight, while I was enjoying a cigar with some single malt and jamming to classic rock on my ipod, I heard a huge thunderous rumbling inside my garage. I looked up to see a red glow and smoke pouring out of the top of my labortory fridge that I use as a kegerator. I don't think this is gonna be cheap to fix. The only upside is that with the cold weather coming, I was getting ready to unplug the compressor anyway and move the jumpers on my Johnson thermostat to convert it to a heater (40F) during the winter months.

Not a drop lost. There were about a dozen cornys in there.

That's the important part. You could always invite us over to drink it before it gets warm.

It's a long way to PA, dude. There's a lot of stuff that was aged in bourbon barrels: New England Cider, Belgain Quad, and Russian Imp Stout.

Oh good, cause we'll be thirsty by the time the BN jet corrals us all up to get over there.

:jnj

Sorry about the fridge though. Hopefully it's less painless than anticipated.

There might be a silver lining to this. I'm 100% certain the compressor is shot. I'm sure we're talking several hundred dollars here. (I got the fridge from a hospital lab for free, so I'm not out anything, BTW) Without prompting, my wife said, "Maybe it might be cheaper to get a big chest freezer and convert it." I can sell her on the energy efficient angle. Wonder if Lowe's would pick up the old one when they deliver the new one. If not, is there a problem with taking a fridge to the dump with the freon in it?
