Drink Up Columbus

Tue Apr 12, 2011 12:36 pm

Hey all, I'm writing blog posts on homebrewing, cooking with beer and general beer stuff for a Columbus, OH centric blog a bunch of friends have started. I'm beginning with a run down of the beer ingredients, but will branch out into more detailed topics later. The target audience is much broader, as the blog also encompasses wine, liquor, bar reviews and events. My goal with the ingredients series is to increase the understanding and appreciation of beer among the general public that will be reading the posts. Feel free to check it out at http://drinkupcolumbus.com/, I'd welcome any feedback or suggestions for future directions to take things.

Thanks WBB. It was hard to not geek out hard core, I think I'm gonna struggle with that in my writing. Keeping at a fairly basic level, at least to start is going to be a challenge. Hopefully stuff takes off and I get a decent amount of people reading and interacting, which can direct future posts.

Is Bernie's still around? Is "Local Color" still playing at Not Al's? How about Mustard's? Also, is Apollo's still open for a mean gyro? I lived there in '95-'96. It was a good time. I kinda want to go back and visit.

I had to do some searching to answer you're questions, I've only been here since 2005 (more like 2008, since we spent a few years in Delaware, OH), so some of the places were before my time or places I haven't been.

Bernie's Bagel? Still here, haven't been.
Local Color doesn't seem to be active, or at least the website that comes up for them hasn't been updated in a few years, haven't been to Not Al's either, or know anything about it.
Mean Mr. Mustard's is no more.
Apollo's is still here.

Quite a few new places for beer and food since the mid 90's too. If you do make it back to visit, let me know.

Very cool, Spider, very cool. It is easy to read and it has good voice throughout. My favorite part is :"An oversimplified analogy would be that yeast pees ethanol and farts carbon dioxide. How appealing!"
Really nice job.
Also, +1 on the cheese analogy. People at the bar I used to work at could not understand why I wanted my Guinness on the bar 10 or 15 minutes before I was done. "Oooh, its going to get warm! YUCK!"....whatever.
I think that you are really onto something with the beer drinking instructions. Easy to follow and they do not sound pretensious, like wine tasting usually is.
